Calibration Tips

For the most precise TV calibration, trained ISF professionals are available to fine tune your home theater.  We included these test patterns on our DVD for those of you who wanted an alternative.

Before any TV adjustments are made, you should darken the room as much as possible. Video always looks best when ambient light is kept to a minimum.

NTSC COLORBARS

This is a standard versatile test pattern that is commonly used to adjust your TV's brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation. We will focus on hue and saturation adjustments with this test pattern, as it is often easier to adjust your brightness and contrast with the Pluge test below.

Adjust your hue and saturation levels while paying close attention to the the yellow and magenta bars in the test pattern. The yellow should be a lemon yellow without orange or green and the magenta should not be red or purple.  Alternatively, your local home theater supply shop may carry blue filters and instructions on how to adjust your TV's hue and saturation using the color bars in conjunction with the blue filter for a less subjective adjustment.

Pluge Test

This test is used to adjust your TV's brightness and contrast.  If you look carefully, there are three vertical bars on the left side of the screen and a series of larger and brighter shades of gray on the right side of the screen.  Adjust your brightness and contrast levels so that you cannot distinguish between the two vertical bars the most to the left.  At the same time the white box should remain white and should not "bloom", or become so bright that there is a halo effect around that box that extends past the gray boxes.

Stepped Gray

This test pattern is to help you notice if your TV is introducing any stray color into areas of the picture that should only be gray. If your TV is functioning correctly, the bars should have a uniform difference in the shades of gray left to right.

Overscan Test

If you own a 4:3 TV set, this can help you determine what percentage of the picture you are losing due to overscan.  It is normal to lose approximately 10% of the picture. The percentage marks are found along the edges of this screen.

Resolution Test

This SMPTE resolution chart helps you realize the resolution of your 4:3 TV. Pay special attention to the vertical lines with the ticks labeled 500, 400, 300, and 250. Locate the point where adjacent lines become visually merged. If your monitor allows you to control sharpness or edge-emphasis, try and find a level that suppresses ringing completely. While adjusting sharpness on this test pattern, you may notice that sharpness reduces the resolution and causes some artifacts. Now, read or estimate from the ticks the number of TVL (TV lines) your monitor is capable of. This is the horizontal resolution of your monitor, i.e., how many vertical lines can be placed within the maximum square that can be put in the active video area. On a normal NTSC TV set, your resolution should be 450 or greater

Audio Test

From our audio test menu, you can send test signals to all of your speakers in your 5.1 setup. While the tone is being played we display a graphic showing you the speaker that should be outputting sound.  This test will help you determine if all of your speakers are hooked up to the correct ports on your AV receiver.
